Spinal Manipulation
Spinal Manipulation Tamworth or Spinal Manipulation Lichfield?
Spinal manipulation or spinal adjustments tend to be techniques used by Tamworth Osteopaths and Tamworth Chiropractors when making corrections to the spine.
Tamworth Physiotherapists are able to perform similar techniques providing they have received adequate post graduate training in manipulation.
Atlas Pain Relief Centre have Tamworth Osteopaths and Tamworth Physiotherapists well trained in spinal manipulations and offer an alternative to Tamworth Chiropractor treatment for back pain, trapped nerves and sciatica.
Chiropractors tend to describe the misaligned vertebrae in the spine as subluxations and they believe that by manipulating the subluxed joints, they can realign the vertebrae and then nerves and blood vessels will perform better.
Osteopaths have a similar approach but are not so focussed on misalignment. Many people have a spine that deviates from the normal. No 2 people are alike, some are tall, some are short and the spine is no different. Providing the spine functions ok and is not causing problems with no discomfort or impairment of movement then best advice is to leave it alone.
Continual cracking of your spine via manipulation will lead to hypermobility of the spinal segments and create more problems. During a spinal manipulation the joint is taken to its full limit of movement before being forced a little more in a high velocity thrust (HVT) This creates additional space within the joint and the sound heard is believed to be nitrogen gas expanding and making a popping sound.
It is important to note that all synovial joints will make this cracking sound if manipulated and does not mean you have a problem in this area. Healthy joints will make the sound which means if someone tells you that you have “something out” and they will put it back for you by cracking your back be aware of what they are doing.
For example, being told you have a disc out of place and they can pop it back is utter rubbish. If your concept is that you have a stack of coins and one has slipped out slightly and it can be pushed back in line then you do not quite understanding what a disc bulge or prolapsed disc means.
Imagine a jam doughnut and it has been squeezed until the jam escapes. This is more like a slipped disc description. It would be a clever trick for someone to push the jam back in the doughnut don’t you think?
If you have a facet lock then spinal manipulation works very well in freeing the offending joint and this is where manipulation has its merits.
