Neck pain is very common and often results in restricted neck movement.
Often the patient will complain of sharp pain when trying to turn the head to the left or right. Pain can be felt in the upper trapezius muscles as well as the neck when performing this movement.
Limited neck movement and mobility will make driving difficult and day to day activities will be very uncomfortable. Muscle spasms are often present which prevent full movement of the head and generally make life miserable.
Causes are varied and can be anything from a road traffic accident (RTA) where there is a rear end shunt resulting in whiplash or as simple as sleeping on your front where your head is rotated to one side all night. This will result in a possible facet lock in your cervical spine or adaptive shortening of your cervical musculature.
Torticollis is another neck condition which gives the patient restricted neck movement and can often have an appearance of the head being pulled over to one side by severe muscle spasms. There are a variety of treatments for this condition and can include injecting Botox into the muscle in order to limit the spasm. Tamworth Osteopaths would look for the cause of this symptom and suggest the appropriate treatment.
Tamworth Osteopaths do not provide Botox treatment and would attempt to look for the cause of the muscle spasm. Spinal manipulations of the cervical spine may be suggested if indicated but this would only be carried out following a thorough examination and safety tests such as a VBI test which examines the suitability of your neck for manipulation.
Trapped nerves in the neck can be caused by degenerative changes or herniated discs which may press against the spinal nerves causing nerve root irritation. This may result in pins and needles into the arm, hand and fingers.
Trapped nerves can be very painful leaving the patient with sleepless nights and a sense of frustration because prescription medication from the GP doesn’t always ease the symptoms.
Whiplash usually involves stretching of spinal ligaments in the neck and results in neck pain and neckache. Headaches are common at this time and if you add the restricted neck mobility to the list of symptoms you will see that the results of an RTA on the neck can have a devastating effect.
As ligaments have a poor blood supply they will heal slowly which means that recovery from whiplash symptoms can be a slow process.?
